Graston Technique

We are pleased to provide our patients with an innovative and proven approach to diagnosing and treating connective soft tissue injuries – the Graston Technique.  The Technique is performed with patented stainless-steel instruments designed to detect and treat soft-tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation to reduce pain and restore function.

When connective tissue, such as muscle, ligaments, or tendons, becomes restricted or scarred, leading to further pain, tenderness, and loss of flexibility and motion.  It is not unusual to find a restriction in one part of the body that produces pain and dysfunction in another area, commonly known as the kinetic chain.  Hospitals, clinics, professional and university sports teams, and industry rely on Graston Technique to treat injuries.

The Graston Technique instruments detect and amplify soft tissue restrictions or dysfunction, similar to how a stethoscope amplifies the heartbeat.  All the instruments have contoured edges designed to conform to the different body parts/surfaces/shapes.

Treatment by Graston Technique

Graston Technique treatment protocols may also include heat, ice, and rehabilitation to restore our patients to their pre-injury activity level.  In addition, muscle re-education and stretching and strengthening exercises are employed to provide our patients with optimal results within a minimal number of treatments.  Following and staying with the recommended treatment plan is critical to achieving the goals set by the doctor and the patient.  Without a complete commitment to treatment, a favorable outcome may not occur.

Most patients report pain reduction and improved function within the first two treatments.  Although it is not unusual to experience some discomfort during the initial treatment, it should dramatically lessen within a short period of time.  Mild to moderate bruising may take place during the process of breaking down old scar tissue.

Factors such as age, history of the condition, occupation, and lifestyle will determine the number of times you will be treated.  The average number of treatments is 6 to 8.  Generally, treatment is performed no more than twice a week unless the clinical circumstances dictate otherwise.

An Advanced Method to Decrease Pain and Improve Function

Graston Therapy is a soft tissue technique that allows us to detect and treat pain resulting from the following:

  1. Scar Tissue
  2. Chronic Inflammation
  3. Adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments
  4. Repetitive Stress Injuries to muscles, joint capsules & connective tissues

With certain conditions over time, we can have a build-up of fibrosis scar tissue, particularly in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the areas of our bodies that have the most use.  This scar tissue can lead to pain and dysfunction as this tissue lacks the strength and flexibility of healthy tissue.  Unfortunately, some areas of the body may entrap the local nerve.

The Graston Technique allows us to detect better and treat these areas because it uses a stainless steel instrument that glides along with a patient’s muscle, tendons, or ligaments, with the right amount of pressure to detect just where the scar tissue or restrictions are located.  Since our body parts are connected in what is referred to as the “kinetic chain,” the use of the Graston Instrument allows the clinician to follow that kinetic chain, effectively uncovering the cause of the problem, then treating the cause and the area of pain or restriction.

When these knots or bands of scar tissue are encountered, both the clinician and the patient sense a restriction, almost like a speed bump or a granular feeling.  The instrument can then be used to “break up” this restriction or adhesion.  After the adhesion is broken down, stretching exercises are used to promote the re-alignment of the fibers into the normal pattern of healthy tissue.

Why Graston?

The benefit of the Graston Technique is not only in the detection of restrictions or adhesions but also in the acceleration of improvements which include:

  1. Decrease chronic or acute pain in a short time
  2. Improve range of motion
  3. Accelerate rehabilitation and recovery
  4. Resolve chronic conditions thought to be permanent
  5. Allow the patient to continue to engage in everyday activities

Followed by Graston Therapy, most patients have been prescribed a home exercise program that is essential to the success of their treatment.  Stretching and strengthening exercises are provided to maintain the release of scar tissues, restrictions, and adhesions.

Conditions That Respond Well To Graston Technique Therapy

In our pursuit to relieve chronic pain, inflammation, and stiffness, we often encounter tightness and restrictions often associated with the buildup of scar tissue and damage caused by injuries that we’re unable to heal properly. The list of conditions that can benefit from the Graston Technique is extensive. A few of the most well-known include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Damage to the Achilles’ Tendon
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Knee injuries
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Scarring from Cesarean Sections
  • Mastectomy Scarring
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries
  • Shin Splints
  • Neck and Cervical Pain
  • Scarring and Injuries Related to Joint Replacement Surgeries
  • Carpal/Cubital Tunnel
  • Fibromyalgia

Hear What A Patient Has To Say

graston-technique-300-1“I am a healthy, active 43-year-old male.  I am an avid outdoorsman and runner.  I was in a motorcycle accident at the age of 18 and sustained a broken leg and a crushed hip.  I had not had any problems until my IT band muscles started aching when I had run long distances.

I previously received treatment from an orthopedic doctor, a sports medicine doctor, and a chiropractor.  I also received physical therapy, cortisone shots, and one shot in the back for my IT band problem and hip pain.  I suffered in pain for two years.  At this point, I started treatment with Dr. Mitch Jacobs for the IT band and hip pain problems.  Dr. Mitch gave me Graston.  After 4-5 Graston treatments, the IT band pain went away!  We started to focus more on the hip pain, and after another 4-5 Graston treatments combined with electrical stimulation therapy, the hip pain disappeared.

Now I am on a maintenance program with Dr. Mitch, and I come in to get the Graston treatments about once a month.  The pain in my hips and IT bands have not returned, and I am able to get back to all of the activities that I previously enjoyed.” – RB
